Pictures From Chores This Weekend
Below are a few pictures from stuff we’ve been up to over the weekend. Working a full time job and trying to take care of an old farm isn’t easy, but it’ll all pay off in the end….
Replacing the front porch (see the old foundation rocks?) that was caving in under our feet:

Burning the pile of wood and brush that had built up in the back yard:

Draining an old oil barrel and taking the empty barrel to the dump:

And finally – getting rid of those old canning jars full of botulism from the late eighties to late nineties:

I hope you emptied out those canning jars and saved them! I reused a lot of jars like that after getting rid of the gunk and saved a pretty penny.
Anna,
I would have but we have so many dang canning jars I think we’re set for life! Those were nasty, nasty things and I didn’t want to pour them out on our property because I hear botulism and other nasties can live in the soil. I don’t want a breeding ground near my house. I suppose I could/should have asked someone from Freecycle if they wanted to pick them up though.
Yes you should have posted the canning jars on Freecycle. Also anything else that someone could use. You could have dumped the contents of those jars down your toilet, sewage treatment or septic system would have taken care of any toxins. Hope you safely disposed of the oil from that nasty drum as well.
Neil,
We’ve given lots of stuff away on freecycle, but those jars were just so nasty I didn’t even think of it. I don’t think I’d want that stuff even in our septic system!
As for the oil barrel, it was actually full of water. I did spend a week calling around and found a place that agreed to take the oil so they could burn it for heat in an auto garage, but once I went to get the oil out I found it was all water.
