New School OutHouses Are InHouses

Compost ToiletOne thing city-dwellers take for granted is access to the city sewerage system. Those who live in more rural areas use septic systems and leach fields for the most part. But a cheaper, and more high-tech, alternative to septic systems is a composting toilet. Not only does it eliminate the high cost of installing a septic system, but it achieves the same thing in less time while producing a highly-fertile, pathogen-free, non-smelly, free fertilizer that can be used on trees and shrubs – although I wouldn’t go so far as to use it in my vegetable garden. And best of all you don’t have to deal with soggy, stinky grass when the septic overflows.

For those of you who can get beyond the obvious “gross out” factor (really, they aren’t as gross as you would think. And they don’t smell when installed properly) I recommend reading this composting toilet review written by Compare The Brands. It outlines the many different types of composting toilets, and which are best for different applications, from small cabins to permanent off-grid homes to large-scale industrial use.
